Board Members

 

Darren Herd – Chair

Darren is an experienced Senior Manager currently responsible for overseeing the planning and wood supply team at Forico Pty Limited. He commenced working for North Forest Products in 1996 at Burnie before taking on several different roles right across the NW, SE and NE of Tasmania for both North Forest Products and Gunns Limited. Darren has held various positions in Tasmania over the last 25 years with a focus on harvest systems, resource management and sustainability. In September 2014 Darren was employed by Forico to lead the Resource and Wood Supply Teams in the rebuilding phase of the business. In his current role he has a focus on the integration of technology and the innovative and adaptive use of these investments into the Forico business. Darren has a BSc (For) from the Australian National University, is a member of the AICD and is a Registered Professional Forester in Australia. Darren is currently a representative on the Forest Safety Code review Steering Committee. 

Darren has a vision for the forest industry where by we can fully integrate all advanced data sets from our forest environment, which will provide a truly optimised, value adding, safe and modern supply chain from the seed to customer.

 

Eva James – Vice Chair

Eva is passionate about the forestry industry. She started her career as a millhand nearly 30 years ago, stacking timber in a drymill, then worked her way through the industry in various roles. She’s been a site cleaner, a production clerk, regional stock controller at French’s, Auspine and Gunns Sawmills, then as a project manager – Tasmanian Training and Skills Development Service at ForestWorks.

Eva moved into the Safety aspect of forestry with AKS Forest Solutions and is now enjoying her role as the Safety Manager at Reliance Forest Fibre.

In addition to being the Vice Chair of our Board at Arbre, she is also the Chair of the Tasmanian Forest Industry WHS Committee. 

Eva firmly believes that training, safety, and teamwork are the key ingredients for the successful future of the forestry industry the Chair of the Tasmanian Forest Industry WHS Committee.

 
Steven Brown

Steven Brown – Treasurer/Secretary

Steven’s professional background is as a Finance Manager, with experience in both forestry and pharmaceutical industries. He has spent the past 15 working years working in independent plantation forest management with Timberlands Pacific, initially responsible for commercial functions, and ultimately managing the operational and strategic direction of the business. Steven has been a Director of Timberlands Pacific since 2009, and the CEO since 2014. Steven manages a high-performance team, strategically focused on sustainably maximising both asset value and cash flow. Long term planning, value recovery, market development, contractor and contract management, combined with best practice HS&E and corporate governance are the pillars of this business. Steven has a B.Com from the University of Tasmania and is a member of CPA Australia.

Outside work, Steven is a keen road cyclist and mountain biker and enjoys sharing travel experiences with his wife and children.

Greg Hickey

Greg commenced as a Trainee Forest Ranger with Forestry Commission in February 1980. Worked in all regions around the state during the training period before eventually settling in the Scottsdale District in 1988 taking on roles in both Operations and Sales. Joined North Forest Products at Triabunna in 1996 as the Area Forester for the Central Highlands. Held a number of roles within the Triabunna Business Unit culminating in appointment as Forest Manager for Gunns Forest Products in 2001. Joined Ta Ann Tasmania in January 2011 as their Senior Manager, Resources and Projects with responsibility for wood flows to their two mills, environmental compliance and certification, and undertaking various projects, the highlight being the development of the plywood mill at Smithton. Greg rejoined Forestry Tasmania in 2014 as the Assistant General Manager, Operations with a specific focus on harvest and transport Contractors.

Appointed General Manager Forest Products with Sustainable Timber Tasmania in 2017 with responsibility for the organisation's supply chain activities, roading and reforestation. Greg has held a number of Industry representative roles including as a Director of FIAT from 2011 - 2014; FIAT Representative on the State Fire Management Council (2002 - 2012) and Smoke Management Working Group (2007 - 2010). Member of the Forest Practices Expert Review panel from 2007 - 2010 and the Forest Industry Fire Management Committee from 2002 - 2009. Currently a foundation member of the Australian Forest Products Association Grower's Chamber Safety SubCommittee.

Clint Webb

My background has been Forest Operations and Forest Management I have worked in the timber industry for past 37 year working in varied roles, starting my career at Forest Tasmania then moving on to work with North Forest Products/ Gunns  based out of Triabunna.

I have headed up Midway Tasmania since Midway limited Pty Ltd decided to have a presence in Tasmania since mid-2018.

Our focus is the thinning of Native forest regrowth with a contract with STT to carry out the thinning of early clear fall burn and seed coupes from the late 1970’s working the program forward.

I have worked in management roles since 2000, I left Gunns in 2002 to work out of Melbourne for 5 years working on Vegetation management projects in QLD & WA and various forestry-based projects. I started my own Forestry Consulting & Harvesting Business in 2008 which I had for ten years from 2008 until starting with Midway in 2018.

My role with Midway is to build a sustainable forestry business, focusing on establishing long term relationships and strong markets for products produced here in Tasmania. Contractor and contract management and overarching control of budgets for the forestry business maintaining HS&E legal governance for forest and forest practices are all part of my role. I have a great team to work with which makes it all worthwhile.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family and enjoying time with our granddaughter.

Clinton Dean

Clinton started work in the late 80’s as a Boilermaker Welder with Salisbury Engineering who specialised in the manufacture of forestry machine products such as log grabs and machine guarding for forestry excavators and skidders. In 1994 Clinton went to BOC Gases as a welding consultant and in 2002 moved into the forestry equipment sales area for a short time with Partek Forest selling Valmet and Timbco machines. In 2005 Clinton went back to the gases industry with TasGas as the Commercial Marketing Manager for the rollout of the Natural Gas pipeline throughout Tasmania and during this time he completed a Graduate Certificate in Business with UTAS. In 2009 Clinton we back into equipment sales with Hitachi and John Deere and is currently working for RDO Equipment specialising in the sale of John Deere forestry equipment for Tasmania.

Greg Bullock

With 30 years’ service in Tasmanian agribusiness, Greg has strong community networks and a passion for Tasmanian primary industries.  Starting from the ground up he started work as a diesel fitter in an agricultural machinery business that over time evolved to senior agribusiness positions through a range of diverse opportunities offering career progression.

Greg has recently taken on the role of Business Manager Tasmania for C3 Australia Pty Ltd, responsible for the development of an emerging business within the greater C3 portfolio.  With qualifications in mechanics, agriculture science, and human resources he is excited to be able to combine all these skills to develop an efficient forestry harvest and haulage contracting business as an integral part of the woodchip supply chain.

 Denise has worked for 11 years in the Forest Industry, previously for the Tasmania Forest Contractors Association, the Australian Forest Contractors Association and the past 6 years for Arbre.  Prior to that her role was Personal Assistant & Human Resources Administrator.

Sandy Bramley
Administrative Assistant

New to the forestry industry, Sandy has previously worked in tool hire and for the National Blood Service in the UK. Returning to Australia with her husband to establish a family farm in Tasmania and raise three boys.

Sandy returned to the workforce as an administration assistant for Woolnorth Wind Farm and she now works part time for Arbre on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
